January 23: Peace
.
By David Robinson

CONNECT: RELEVANT
WHY should I study “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Peace”?
• To understand what it means to be at peace in a hostile world.
• To be at peace with God.
• To find peace with others.

LEARN:
CREDIBLE
WHAT are the Bible facts in “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Peace”?
• God gives me peace; I should accept it (John 14:27).
• I am justified through faith (Rom. 5:1).
• I can take all my cares and concerns to Jesus (Matt. 11:28, 29).
• I should strive to live in peace with everyone (Rom. 12:18).
• God lays down the rules for His caliber of love, and if I
follow them, I will have peace (Rom. 12:9-21).
• Before I can have a better relationship with God, I must have good relationships with others (Matt. 5:23, 24).
• Christ shows me how to make peace with other people
(Col. 3:13-15).

APPLY:
TIMELY
HOW are the principles of “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Peace” seen today in the media?
• Making peace before battle. Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic looked to settle some unresolved issues before game six of the Eastern Conference semifinals (sports.yahoo.com/nba/news. Accessed May 13, 2009).

APPLY:
CONVERSATION

Witness: So how did you feel after last night’s basketball game? I noticed that you and one of your teammates had a little dispute on the court. What’s up with that?

Player: Nothing big. I just wanted him to spread the ball around rather than taking all those shots.

Witness:
Oh. Well did you guys work it out?

Player:
Actually, we just agreed to disagree.

Witness: I’m sorry to hear that. Last night I read a formula for conflict resolution in Matthew 5:23, 24.
Player: But how does that apply to my situation? I didn’t think it applied to this situation.

Witness: Why not? He’s your teammate, someone you need to be in harmony with so that you guys can build a stronger game. Your situation reminds me of how Dwight Howard had to apologize to his coach and teammates. Why do you think he took time to apologize?

Player:
Probably because he needs as much chemistry in his team as possible. The more chemistry, the better the team can perform.

Witness:
Exactly.  It’s the same thing with Christians. God wants us to have strong chemistry so that others will be attracted to Him through us. In my Bible study group this weekend, we’ll be talking about peace. The guys would like to hear your views on building “chemistry,” as you put it.

INTEGRATE: DOABLE
HOW do I use and share the principles of “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Peace” for my own spiritual growth and share them with other people?

• Being at peace with difficult people enables the muscles in my neck and shoulders to relax.
• Sometimes I find it difficult to establish peace during a basketball game, but my attempts are a good witness.
• When God seems to be far from me, I recognize that I have somehow severed my relationship with Him and that I must check my behavior and thinking to see where I’ve severed the peaceful relationship.
• When some tells me that God seems far from them, I share my personal experience and help them explore where they may have broken the peace with God.

MASTER:
MEASURABLE
WHAT changes in thinking, action, or reaction have I begun/made as a result of studying “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Peace”?
• Since I have personally experienced the results of receiving the peace of the Lord, I willingly share about the peace that He offers.
• I put God at the top of my plan for dealing with stress.
