February 6: Kindness
.
CONNECT: RELEVANT

WHY should I study “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Kindness”?

• To better understand the meaning of God’s kindness to me.
• To help me explain and model God’s kindness to the
rough-and-ready, coarse, and cool.

LEARN: CREDIBLE

WHAT are the Bible facts in “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Kindness”?

• I must love my enemies (Matt. 5:44).
• If I don’t love other sportsmen who are against me, God will not forgive my sins (Luke 7:47).
• I must show extra care to my peers who are new to the faith as well as to my seniors who have lost their way (1 Thess. 2:7; 2 Tim. 2:24, 25).
• I should treat every ballplayer with kindness, even though they may not treat me the same way (Luke 6:35).
• I must remember to be a responsible Christian witness in my relationships (Col. 3:12-17).
• I must be kind in the way I talk to people, even in the heat of sports events (Eph. 4:32).
• Realizing that my words can be used for good or bad, I must make a conscious effort not to wound another person’s spirit (Prov. 15:1-5; 25:11-15).

APPLY: TIMELY

HOW are the principles of “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Kindness” seen today in the media?

• Some NBA players are kind.
Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic donates a total of $50,000 to charities within his community (nba.com/magic/news. Accessed May 5, 2009).
• Presidential kindness. Barak Obama pledged to make the United States a leader in ending deaths by malaria by 2015. By donating money, time, and other necessities, he wants to start with eliminating the deaths by malaria in Africa (whitehouse.gov/the_press_office. Accessed May 5, 2009).

APPLY: CONVERSATION

Seatmate on Public Transportation: This world is getting so bad. Sometimes I wonder how bad it could get.
Witness: You’re right. Yet there are still people who try to improve the quality of life for other people.
Seatmate on Public Transportation:  Such as?
Witness: Dwight Howard just donated $50,000 to charities in his community.
Seatmate on Public Transportation: But don’t you think that the NBA forces him to do some charity work?
Witness: Maybe. But what about Obama?
Seatmate on Public Transportation: I remember hearing that he wants the United States to be at the forefront of the war against malaria—no more deaths by malaria by 2015. I can support that!
Witness: Some of my friends are doing a food drive for the community. We’d appreciate having some more good conversation—and another pair of strong hands. Here’s a little card that tells where we’ll meet. I know your voice, man! I’ll be listening for you. (The card bears my name, mobile number, and e-mail address.)

INTEGRATE: DOABLE

HOW do I use and share the principles of “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Kindness” for my own spiritual growth and share them with other people?

• I have memorized some texts from this week’s lesson, so I can take people to the Word.
• I take my fruit wherever I go—the mall, the park, the rec center. Whoever is there can enjoy it.
• I share with my brother my experiences of how God has shown kindness to me, e.g., keeping my car running even after exceeding 150,000 miles.

MASTER: MEASURABLE

WHAT changes in thinking, action, or reaction have I begun/made as a result of studying “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Kindness”?

• I focus on being kind in touchy situations when I’m on the basketball court instead of just focusing on being right.
• As a writer, I am responsible for being diplomatic (kind) as well as clear and correct.
• During my internship I shared a television with two other people in my living quarters. I stretched so they could watch one of their favorite programs that wasn’t one of my favorites.
