March 06: Self-control By David Robinson
CONNECT: RELEVANT
WHY should I study “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Self-control”?
• To remind myself of the importance of self-control.
• To see examples of self-control within the Bible.
• To learn how to be more self-controlled.
LEARN: CREDIBLE
WHAT are the Bible facts in “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Self-control”?
• I must not be a hypocrite when I tell others to have self-control (1 Cor. 9:27).
• I have been warned not to love the world (1 John 2:15, 16).
• Paul provides a framework for self-control that I can relate to (Phil. 4:8).
• By remembering that he would dishonor God, Joseph was able to resist the advances of Potiphar’s wife
(Gen. 39:7-20).
• I must dwell on things of the Spirit because the things of this world will fade away (Gal. 6:8).
• The Bible gives me pointers on how to live holy as a new person in Christ (Col. 3:1-10).
APPLY: TIMELY
HOW are the principles of “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Self-control” seen today in the media?
• Temper, temper. Derek Fisher of the Los Angeles Lakers and Rafer Alston of the Orlando Magic were both given a one-game suspension for their actions in Game Two of the semi-conference finals. Fisher elbowed one player above the neck, and Alston smacked the back of another player’s head during heated moments of their respective games (sports.yahoo.com/nba/news. Accessed May 8, 2009).
• Are you addicted? Ever since the growing popularity of social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, many users admit that they spend an unusual amount of hours glued to the screen (cnn.com/2009/HEALTH. Accessed May 8, 2009).
APPLY: CONVERSATION
Friend: Tell me you saw that game last night!
Witness: No, what happened?
Friend: Man, it was like the WWE [World Wrestling Entertainment] out there! Derek Fisher elbowed another player, and Rafer Alston slapped someone’s head!
Friend: Really? That’s crazy! Talk about a lack of self-control.
When players lose control in the tense moments, that takes away from the game. And it sets a bad example for the little kids and teens watching. By the way, what were you doing last night?
Friend: I got stuck on Facebook.
Witness: How long were you on?
Friend: About six hours.
Witness: What?
Friend: Yes. I may need some help in that area.
Witness: Well this Bible study group that I’m in is addressing real problems—such as how to gain better self-control. We meet every Wednesday, and we could use some of your ideas in our brainstorming sessions.
Friend: My ideas?
Witness: Sure. You’re pretty cool. Come and share with us.
INTEGRATE: DOABLE
HOW do I use and share the principles of “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Self-control” for my own spiritual growth and share them with other people?
• At the mall or the grocery store I used to buy because I felt like it. Now I have better self-control and buy only the things I need.
• I’m setting an example for the youth that I mentor. If they see me exerting self-control in when and how much I eat, for example, they will begin to emulate me.
MASTER: MEASURABLE
WHAT changes in thinking, action, or reaction have I begun/made as a result of studying “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Self-control”?
• My first reactions are more positive than they used to be.
• I give people examples of self-control in the Bible, e.g., Joseph in Potiphar’s house, and in world events to illustrate that having self-control is always beneficial—whether or not things visibly and immediately turn out as hoped for.
