March 13: Righteousness
.
By David Robinson

CONNECT: RELEVANT

WHY should I study “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Righteousness”?
• To help me better understand the meaning of
righteousness.
• To understand that my version of righteousness means nothing.
• To learn how to properly obtain Jesus’ gift of righteousness.

LEARN: CREDIBLE

WHAT are the Bible facts in “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Righteousness”?

• If I earnestly seek righteousness, I will achieve it in Christ (Matt. 5:6).
• Wanting to be righteous puts me in the company of God (Ps. 11:7).
• I should want to seek the kingdom of God (Matt. 6:33).
• I will be able to identify those who follow the path of righteousness (1 John 2:29).
• Unless my righteousness is God-based, I will not enter the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 5:20).
• Righteousness is a gift that I must accept (Gal. 3:6; James 2:23).
• If I believe that God is real, my actions will support that (1 John 3:7).

APPLY: TIMELY

HOW are the principles of “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Righteousness” seen today in the media?

• Vikings’ loyalty is right on target. Nick Urban of the Minnesota Vikings came in and worked his scheduled shift at Target even after he signed a big NFL contract (sports.yahoo.com/nfl. Accessed May 8, 2009).
• County executive accused of misconduct. John R. Leopold was accused of making sexual advances to a state worker who, with the NAACP, are filing complaints. Leopold allegedly repeatedly asked the woman for her phone number  (hometownannapolis.com/news/top. Accessed May 8, 2009).

APPLY: CONVERSATION

Witness: Did you hear about Nick Urban?
Friend: No. Who’s he?
Witness: He used to work at Target.
Friend: So what’s so special about that?
Witness: What’s special is that he kept working his shifts after he signed a big NFL contract.
Friend: That’s pretty nice of him.
Witness: When he was interviewed, he said that his parents raised him to be responsible. That’s more than I can say for John Leopold.
Friend: Who’s that?
Witness: He’s the county executive who’s having complaints filed against him by a state worker.
Friend: Another bigwig going down on account of lust!
Witness: So sad. With what the media is allowed to show, it’s hard to even keep thoughts pure.
Friend: My struggle is that of anyone trying to stay pure as Christians define “pure.” You know television has people claiming to be Christians doing some pretty questionable things—even on the so-called “family channels” and family programs.
Witness: Well a group of us are meeting on Friday night to work through issues like this. You’re more than welcome to come. Sometimes it’s good to get together with close friends and discuss our temptations and struggles.
Friend: Sounds interesting enough, but I don’t know if I’m comfortable sharing my personal information.
Witness: That’s perfectly understandable. We have several members who come and just listen. And they say they have learned how to handle specific situations that way. They’ve also shared some useful insights.
Friend: OK. That sounds a little less intimidating. I’ll let you know.

INTEGRATE: DOABLE

HOW do I use and share the principles of “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Righteousness” for my own spiritual growth and share them with other people?
• As I lead my younger friends in the path of righteousness, I find that I’m stronger and more focused.
• I more easily explain to my peers what it means to be righteous, using terms and examples they understand.

MASTER: MEASURABLE

WHAT changes in thinking, action, or reaction have I begun/made as a result of studying “The Fruit of the Spirit Is Righteousness”?
• I now choose companions who walk in the path of righteousness rather than choose fun, talented, or successful people.
• I’m a credible support for other young adults as well as for teens.
